Travel Photo – Domes of the dead

As I passed through Kazakhstan from the south to the north I noticed the extraordinary graveyards all over the country. They build large and colourful domes in stead of the traditional tombstone. One guide I met told me that traditionally these domes where built in a readily degradable stone material so that the graves disappeared  within a certain amount of time, and they could build new graves on the same ground. Nowdays rich people build the large and highly decorated domes in concrete, and the result is huge graveyards with clolorful architectural treasures spotted all over Kazakhstan.
